Authority vs Power

Understanding Your Position in Christ

Core Truth

Authority is not something you earn; it is something you receive because of your position in Christ.

Key Scriptures

  • Luke 10:19
  • Ephesians 1:19–23
  • Matthew 28:18–20
  • Colossians 2:10

Teaching

Many believers struggle because they are trying to operate in power without understanding authority. Power is the ability to do something; authority is the right to use that power.

Jesus did not say, β€œI give you power over the enemy.” He said, β€œI give you authority… over all the power of the enemy” (Luke 10:19). That distinction matters. The enemy may possess power, but he does not have authority. Authority always outranks power.

Authority flows fromΒ position, not performance. Ephesians teaches that Jesus is seated far above all principality and power and we are seated with Him. If Jesus has authority and we are in Christ, then we share in that authority by position.

Many believers pray asking God to do what He has already authorized them to do. Authority must be exercised, not requested. When you understand your position in Christ, your prayers shift from begging to believing, from fear to confidence, and from reacting to ruling in faith.

Prayer

Father, thank You that my authority is not based on my performance but on my position in Christ. I receive the authority You have given me through Jesus, and I choose to walk in it by faith. Amen.

Personal Reflection

How does knowing my position in Christ change how I pray and respond to challenges?

Have I been asking God to do things He has already given me authority to handle?

What areas of my life require me to stand in authority instead of fear?
